KEY TERMS
Immigration: movement of people to a country that they are not native to. The four main types of immigration status are citizen, resident, non-immigrant, and undocumented.
Undocumented immigrant: immigrants living in the United States that lack citizenship or another form of legal immigration status. Do not call these people The term "illegal" when applied to people is considered by many to be a slur.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA): life-changing policy that grants temporary legal status to undocumented immigrants under certain conditions.
Dreamers: the young folks who are given the opportunity to transform their lives via DACA.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): government agency created in 2003 after 9/11; conducts removal operations including the relocation, detention, and deportation of undocumented immigrants in the United States
Customs and Border Protection (CBP): government agency that patrols the United States’s borders with Mexico and Canada; responsible for separating families at the border.
